Devil, Get Behind Me!

As a Christian, you have an adversary. Satan, also known as the devil, will try his very best to discourage you from living a Christian life and walking with the Lord. How do we overcome the devil as we try to do what is right? First, let's look at how Jesus handled the devil's attacks. We can read in Matthew 4:1-11, " Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He was afterward an hu

Order My Steps

It is fun to walk barefoot through the sand at the seashore. As you walk, your feet leave an impression in the sand, a footprint. By looking behind you, you can see how many steps you have taken. Some people use an app or a fitness watch to track how many steps they take in a day. The Lord knows every step you will take in your entire life. Job 31:4 says, "Doth not He see my ways, and count all my steps?" God's knowledge is so far above ours that He can count every hair on o

Chosen

Once there was a little girl who desperately wanted a puppy. She begged her parents for a puppy until they finally gave in. They went to a local animal shelter that had a whole litter of puppies ready for adoption. The little girl played with the puppies for an hour, then her parents told her it was time to make a decision. The girl reached down and picked up the runt of the litter. "This is the one I want!" she exclaimed. The runt had been chosen. God has reached down and c

Providence

I recently watched a documentary titled "The American Miracle." In this documentary, it highlighted how the providence of God played a huge role in the United States of America becoming an independent country. I will discuss this further in the coming paragraphs. But first--what is providence? The Webster dictionary of 1828 defines providence in this way, "In theology, the care and superintendence which God exercises over His creatures. He that acknowledges a creation and den

Healing

Are you in need of healing? Maybe your body needs physical healing. Perhaps you need healing from past events and emotional trauma. Maybe you need healing in your spirit. Whatever your needs are for healing, God has promised healing in His Word. It is a promise that God has not revoked, it is still relevant today. In Bible times, King Hezekiah had fallen sick. The prophet Isaiah had told him that he would not recover. Hezekiah prayed to God. We can read the results of his pr

Are You Hungry?

Picture this: You have not eaten all day. It is 4:00 in the afternoon. Your stomach is growling. A friend suggests meeting up at a local buffet restaurant. You immediately agree. When you arrive, all of the food looks and smells amazing! You take three trips to the buffet. Your hunger has been satisfied. Now consider this: you ate lunch at 3:00 in the afternoon. Your friend wants to meet at a buffet restaurant at 4:00, one hour later. You are not hungry at all, but you agree

Love One Another

Jesus said, "A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another." (John 13:34). That is a tall order. He didn't say to love only when someone deserves it. He didn't say to love only those who love you in return. He said to love one another. Jesus even encouraged us to love our enemies. In another encounter, someone asked Jesus what the greatest commandment was in the law. "Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the L

I Can Do All Things Through Christ

Do you have a very long "to do" list? Do you feel pressure to get everything done today before tomorrow's tasks descend upon you? Is there ever really enough time in a day to get everything done on your list? Every week at work, I make my own "to do" list. It is a great tool to help me stay organized and make sure I do not forget what I need to get done. My job can easily become overwhelming and stressful. There have been some very hard days. I'm sure you have experienced sim

Prepare for Rain

Our state has been in the worse drought in several years this year. Low rain totals have called for water restrictions. Prolonged drought can cause famine and make life much harder. We need to pray that God will send much needed rain to our thirsty earth. This can also be applied spiritually. When we are refreshed in our spirit and washed by the water of the Word, we feel good. Sometimes, though, we walk through dry seasons. During those times, we long to feel God's presence

Bloom Where You Are Planted

Have you ever been driving down an interstate highway and, all of a sudden, you see a beautiful field of flowers growing right in the median of the highway? Those seeds were planted there to beautify that empty space on the highway. The seeds do not care where they are planted. If they get enough sunlight and water, the seeds will sprout and grow into beautiful flowers that can be enjoyed by all who drive by. Your life may feel as empty as the median was before the flowers w

Your Ways Are Higher Than Mine

Have you ever wondered why you had to go through so many things in your life? Maybe you have had countless disappointments, heartaches, and trials that you have had to face. Isaiah 55:8-9 reads, " For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts." The Bible also says in Psalm 37:23, "The steps of a good man are ordered b

Calvary's Blessing

Have you ever pondered on the blessing that Calvary is? Have you ever questioned where you would be right now if it wasn't for the sacrifice of love that was made on Calvary? Have you ever accepted the free gift of salvation that was made possible through the incredible grace that was shed upon us because of Calvary? Calvary was not a very joyful scene when it occurred. The location was actually called "The Place of a Skull." It was a place of grief and sorrow. Many people w

For Such a Time as This

Have you ever wondered, "What is my purpose? Why am I here? What is God doing? Why am I stuck in this same place year after year? Why is my life so hard while others seem to have it easier?" You are not alone in your questioning. Many people have been through difficult circumstances not understanding what it was all about at the moment. Later in life, God's purpose can become clear, when He chooses to reveal it. I love the book of Esther in the Bible. Esther was just an ordi

Small Things

At the house I used to live in, there were two towering pin oak trees in the front yard, along with two in the back yard. These trees were huge, yet they began as a tiny acorn. This is a lesson that something great can come from something small. Think about the story of David in the Bible. He was Jesse's youngest son. He took some food to his brothers in the army one day and heard Goliath the giant defying the army of God's people. David volunteered to go out and fight again

The Sun is Still Shining

The other day I was driving down the road, and I saw a beautiful sight. There were clouds in the sky, and rays of sunshine were streaming down through the clouds. I was reminded in that moment that the sun is still there shining, even if it is hidden behind the clouds. Sometimes dark storm clouds cover our lives, but the Son of God is still shining His light into our hearts. No matter what you are facing, God is there with you. Just like the sun rays peeking through the dark

His Grace is Sufficient

We have a bus driver at our school who is retiring this year. He tells me how many days are left until the end of the school year. One day he told me there were like 61 school days left. I asked him, "But will I make it?" His reply was, "You will. By His grace." I then said, "He said His grace is sufficient." What is grace? The Oxford English Dictionary defines grace in this way, " As a quality of God: benevolence towards humanity, bestowed freely and without regard to merit

No Fear

A few weekends ago, the meteorologists were calling for a potentially crippling ice storm to hit our area. The ice could cause power outages that would last for days. We were encouraged to prepare ahead of the storm. As supplies became impossible to find and I thought about losing power, anxiety kicked in. I turned on my favorite Bible verses for anxiety video on YouTube. In the video, it mentioned the story in Mark 4 where Jesus calmed the storm. In Mark 4:40, we read the wo

Christian Benefits

When someone is interviewing for a new job, they generally have a few questions to ask the interviewer. One of those questions that comes to the forefront is, "What type of benefits does your company offer its employees?" Jobs that include paid holidays, sick time, health insurance, and retirement benefits are desirable. Being a Christian has benefits that far surpass anything an earthly employer can give. What are some Christian benefits? One benefit a Christian has is peac

My Burden Bearer

In the Old Testament, there was an animal called the scapegoat. This is recorded in Leviticus chapter 16. Aaron the priest would lay his hands on the head of this goat and confess the iniquities, transgressions, and sins of the people of Israel. Then the goat was let go in the wilderness. This goat was bearing the iniquities of the people. God bears not only our sins (when He died on the cross), but He also bears our burdens. In Matthew 11:28-29, Jesus said, "Come to Me, all

Time

At my current job, I get off almost 2 weeks for a Christmas break. It is during this time that I try to get together with family and friends for lunches and holiday gatherings. I have to make time and be intentional to set up plans to spend time with people who are dear to me. I make time for people I love. I realize that I need to do this same thing with God. God is the most important One in my life. He gave me the very life that I am living now. He died for my salvation. H
