Small Things

At the house I used to live in, there were two towering pin oak trees in the front yard, along with two in the back yard. These trees were huge, yet they began as a tiny acorn. This is a lesson that something great can come from something small.
Think about the story of David in the Bible. He was Jesse's youngest son. He took some food to his brothers in the army one day and heard Goliath the giant defying the army of God's people. David volunteered to go out and fight against Goliath. Saul said to David in 1 Samuel 17:33, "Thou art not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him: for thou art but a youth, and he a man of war from his youth." David then proceeded to tell Saul how he had killed a lion and a bear as he was tending his father's sheep. These small things that God allowed David to do were preparing him for bigger things ahead. David chose five stones for his sling. Not a sword or spear, just ordinary stones. Little is much when it is placed in God's hands. The mighty Goliath was struck with a stone and David beheaded him. Out of small things came a great victory for Israel!
There is another story in the Bible that used small things. Jesus wanted to feed a hungry crowd. When He asked how many loaves they had, the disciples replied, "Five, and two fishes" (Mark 6:38). Jesus blessed the bread and fish and ended up feeding five thousand men. They even took up twelve baskets of leftovers! Small things can go a lot farther when placed in God's hands!
In Matthew 25:14-29, Jesus tells this parable, "For the kingdom of heaven is as a man travelling into a far country, who called his own servants, and delivered unto them his goods. And unto one he gave five talents, to another two, and to another one; to every man according to his several ability; and straightway took his journey. Then he that had received the five talents went and traded with the same, and made them other five talents. And likewise he that had received two, he also gained other two. But he that had received one went and digged in the earth, and hid his lord's money. After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them. And so he that had received five talents came and brought other five talents, saying, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me five talents: behold, I have gained beside them five talents more. His lord said unto him, Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them. His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. Then he which had received the one talent came and said, Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown, and gathering where thou hast not strawed: And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine. His lord answered and said unto him, Thou wicked and slothful servant, thou knewest that I reap where I sowed not, and gather where I have not strawed: Thou oughtest therefore to have put my money to the exchangers, and then at my coming I should have received mine own with usury. Take therefore the talent from him, and give it unto him which hath ten talents. For unto every one that hath shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath." This parable shows that God rewards those who are faithful with small things. Luke 16:10 reads, "He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least is unjust also in much."
Do not think that anything you are doing for God is too small. Are you a stay-at-home mom? Rejoice in knowing that you are ministering to your family and children. You are pouring into the next generation and raising them in the admonition of God. If you are not a musician, you can still offer God your praise and worship in song. If you are not a singer, you can clap and raise your hands in worship. Just assembling together with other believers together in church is a small thing that you can do to honor God.
We all have different talents to use for God. Maybe you are good at talking to people and can reach a soul for Christ. Maybe you are a prayer warrior and can pray the prayer of faith. Even faith as small as a grain of mustard seed can cause mountains to move! (Matthew 17:20) You may feel like your talent is small or insignificant, but remember, small things placed in God's hands can yield great results. Just use your talents for Him and be a blessing to those around you. You may be surprised at what God can do through you, if you are willing to surrender to Him.
