A Firm Foundation

This weekend, we enjoyed a reunion with members of a church that we used to attend. It was nice to see everyone again after so long. We were asked if anyone wanted to share a memory of the church. A couple of people shared how that they were thankful for the foundation that the pastor had laid. By foundation, they meant teaching the Word.
If you want a structurally sound house, you must have a foundation. Jesus illustrated this in Luke 6:47-49, "Whosoever cometh to Me, and heareth My sayings, and doeth them, I will shew you to whom he is like: He is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock. But he that heareth, and doeth not, is like a man that without a foundation built an house upon the earth; against which the stream did beat vehemently, and immediately it fell; and the ruin of that house was great." Without the right foundation, your house is sure to fall.
What foundation should we be building our lives on? Paul answered this precise question in 1 Corinthians 3:11, “For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ.” Isaiah 28:16 reads, “Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation: he that believeth shall not make haste.”
Over time, some home foundations begin to crack. Our foundation on Christ has no such problem. 2 Timothy 2:19 declares, “Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are His. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.” Proverbs 10:25 reads, “As the whirlwind passeth, so is the wicked no more: but the righteous is an everlasting foundation.” Our foundation is eternal! 1 Timothy 6:19 says, “Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.”
The One Who laid the foundation of the earth is the same foundation that we build our lives upon. He was slain before the foundation of the world for our sins so that we could become righteous. God is so good to us!
